HVAC Efficiency Ratings -
HSPF, SEER, AFUE, & EER

HSPF RatingEnergy efficiency should be a top priority for every home and building owner, especially with the steadily increasing energy rates. Choosing the right heating and cooling system for a home can be complicated because product listings for these types of home comfort systems include specialized industry ratings that are used to measure each system's efficiency. A lot of average consumers might not know what these ratings are, and might become discouraged by not being able to easily recognize which system will be perfect for their home. Below is a list of definitions for energy efficiency abbreviations that will be used in various home comfort system product descriptions.

HSPF Rating

(Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) – This is a rating that is used to measure the energy efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system. It is calculated by finding the ratio between the BTU (British Thermal Unit) heat output and the Watt-hours of electricity used while the system is in operation. The higher the HSPF rating is, the more efficient the heating or cooling system will be. Manufacturers are required to have a HSPF rating of at least 6.8.

SEER

(Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) – This rating is used to measure the efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps when they are in their cooling process. This rating is calculated by finding the ratio between the BTU and the Watt-hours of electricity that is being used while the system is operating. This ratio also takes in account the number of days the system is used, and the amount of hours that the system is used per day. It is mandatory that manufacturers produce cooling equipment that receives a SEER rating of at least 13.0.

AFUE

(Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) – This rating is used to measure the efficiency of gas or oil powered furnaces. It will give you a percentage that will tell you how much of the fuel you are using in your furnaces is being properly utilized, and how much of it is being wasted. The minimal rating for this type of efficiency test varies, depending on what type of fuel you are using in your furnace.

EER

(Energy Efficiency Ratio) – This is a measurement that is also used for cooling systems. It is similar to a SEER rating, but it factors in different variables, including indoor and outdoor temperatures while the system is operating and humidity levels. It is used as a metric to project the efficiency rating of the system throughout the entire year, instead of just in the peak of the season when the system is being operated most frequently. This type of rating can give you a more specified efficiency for when your cooling system is functioning during peak day operations. The minimum requirement for an EER rating fluctuates because average outside temperatures are a variable in calculating a system's EER rating.
